Greg and Tan's Key West Adventures - Days 4 & 5

All things must come to an end ...
Yesterday Key West finally got a significant amount of rain. Amy said they were in a drought and needed it, so it gave is some time to get a slow start. Greg wanted breakfast so he ventured out for Dennys while I hung back in the room and ate my leftover fried green tomato sandwich (which was still delish, btw).

Around 2 o'clock I decided to venture out to the beach even though there were still some sprinkles. Our resort had a private beach for its guests and I was able to grab the last beach chair and lay out in anticipation that the rain would be ending soon. The chair came with an umbrella so in the intermittent sun and rain pattern I was able to find shelter.
The sun did eventually come out and I took full advantage! I was determined to come back home LOOKING like I've been on vacation lol. While I was sunning I had mini-battles with two lizards, one small and one MUCH larger. I'm not skittish but I'm very territorial so they had to go and I was NOT going to lose my very valuable real estate. πŸ˜’
Finally my love joined me on the beach. We could only hang out for a short while, because I booked a sunset cruise on a catamaran which was boarding at 6:15 pm. We were going to change but decided against it in favor of spending our last fleeting moments on the beach together.
Around 5:45 pm we left and in spite of a wrong turn and having to double back, we made the dock on time AND the ramp to board the boat was placed right at my feet!
The boat alshad a singer, Michelle, who is my new best friend because she let me sing with her. 🀣
The boat had complimentary hors d'oeuvres and an open bar. Now you all know we don't drink so I made sure I sampled every mini plate that came by! Quote of the night was, "I'm getting what I paid for." 😏 The ride was amazing thank the views were breathtaking. We actually met three couples, one of which was from Silver Spring! The other two were friends who traveled together to the Keys on vacation. We promised to reconnect when they visit DC - they REALLY want to visit the NMAAHC. As a member of the museum I wanted them to have all the details. But the highlight was just being able to enjoy each other's company and really reflect on how blessed we are and grateful to be able to get away this week.
When we docked Greg wanted to take one more stab at getting some great conch fritters so we stopped by a restaurant that had good reviews, but it was late. We knew we needed to get back and get ready for the flight the next day.

One more food stop - we went to a restaurant called The Breakfast Club Too (can they do that?!) We figured if we had a nice breakfast it would hold us until we got home today. Greg ordered the veggie "rosti" (eggs and veggies over potatoes) and ordered chimichurra sauce for it. I ordered a bananas foster Belgian waffles with a side of eggs and bacon. I went into the venture KNOWING I was not going to eat it all. Honestly I couldn't even eat half the waffle or the eggs. I planned to split the bacon with Greg anyway. He ended up eating half my eggs too lol. And no breakfast in Florida would be complete without a glass of Florida orange juice - it was all so indescribably yummy!
So now we sit in the airport, waiting to board in about 7 minutes. Our flight was delayed but we are good - big breakfast right?! It's been an amazing time but we really miss the boys and family and are looking forward to coming back home. See you soon!

Greg and Tan's Key West Adventures - Day 3

Yesterday was pretty full and we got in late and were EXHAUSTED but I'm back!

Day 3 was a bit interesting as we have received word that a tropical storm may have impact on the weather. Fortunately the day was 95% dry in spite of the forecast, and we were able to get a lot of activities in. Shout out to my sister Linda who sparked my mind into thinking like my mom when we go on vacation - always look for the Black/cultural history of the town you visit. So yesterday we started off on an informal "Key West Black History" excursion.

We started off at the "Little White House" which is the residence I referenced earlier - it was visited 11 times by President Harry Truman. We decided to take a tour and learned he was EXTREMELY progressive for his time, real salt of the earth farmer boy with no college education! He also had very specific ideas about segregation and race which put him in disfavor with many of his contemporaries. He was the President who created the Commission of Civil Rights whose job it was to ensure there was no discrimination of Black contractors and employees in the Federal Government and to review current law enforcement practices, and recommend actions to the President that will protect the Civil Rights of citizens. Upon their recommendation, he desegregated the armed forces. He was also the first President to address the NAACP.  Pretty radical for the early 50s when Jim Crow was looming large in the South and Dr. King was just coming to prominence.
They don't allow many pics inside the house, just in designated areas.

From there we visited Bahma Village. Most of the Black residents of Key West are of Bahamian ancestry. Bahama Village is an area that historically has hosted markets and shops owned by those residents.
We went to lunch (of course) at a "southern"  restaurant there called Firefly. Greg ordered a deviled eggs and a salad with blackened shrimp. I ordered pork rinds and a fried green tomato sandwich. SUPERB! The deviled eggs were OKAY but Greg really enjoyed his salad as I did with my sandwich.

We weren't really sure what to do from there so we just drove around Key West, trying to push the boundaries and seeing areas we hadn't seen before. So drive we did for about two hours! We soon discovered that Key West is much smaller than we thought and all roads lead back to the shore. πŸ€”"Wait a minute, this looks just like ... it can't be because ... daggonit we are back HERE again!" 🀣 We did stumble upon the cemetery where Black residents traditionally are buried. The cemeteries were at once segregated,  and once they were desegregated the Black residents continue to use it because their ancestors' remains are there. Also interesting because most of you know that Greg used to be the director of a cemetery of a similar history in Prince George's County. No pictures though. 🀷🏾‍♀️
But of course you can't be in Key West without getting WHAT ------> BAHAMIAN RUM CAKE! 🀣🀣🀣 No seriously I know the answer is supposed to be Key Lime Pie, but that was not my mission. For a girl who doesn't drink rum cake is in my SOUL - thank you Grandma Rhoda! Anyway, I did a Google search to discover that the Bahamian Rum Cake store no longer had a location in Key West. 😒 I could, however, get Tortuga rum cake from the original Key Lime Pie Bakery which is within walking distance of the resort. πŸ˜‹ So we drove there, and made a, er ... SOME purchases. Too much to put in the luggage so we left there and went to the post office to have them mailed home. 😊
After all that walking and driving it was late afternoon and still no real significant rain so we decided to return to Bahama Village to a restaurant called Pepper Pots (yes like the Avengers lol). We had seen it earlier and it advertised authentic Caribbean food like roti and sorrel and curry and jerk, so you know we were all in. We were greeted by the most lovely little girl (about 10 or 11?) who looked like she was doing homework πŸ€” but got up and walked behind the counter to help us dissect the menu to figure out what we wanted. Immediately going into teacher mode, I asked for her name and she told me Naila (sp?) I repeated it to make sure I pronounced it correctly and she confirmed. As she was talking to us her mom, Amy, came out to take over the hostess duties. I assured her that her baby girl did an EXCELLENT job! Amy helped us make our selections and was SO SWEET! Greg got ANOTHER salad with Jerk shrimp and I got the roti with curry chicken. I also got th sorrel and Greg ordered the Tamarind iced tea.
Now y'all know I can't eat that much food right? Most of that roti is sitting in the refrigerator in our room as we speak lol (as is half of the fried green tomato sandwich). Amy then began to tell us about the neighborhood. Unfortunately, gentrification has taken over even Bahama Village and they are now the ONLY Black-owned business in the community. I was shocked but not surprised. I realized that all of the kitschy stores, galleries, and restaurants were, indeed, NOT minority-owned in a community in the MIDDLE of the homes that are visibly filled with poor Black residents. It stung a little bit. Amy said they had only been in business for six months but they were doing well. When they opened the restaurant the Black residents came by and congratulated them for reclaiming space in the neighborhood. They have won awards and been featured in the local newspaper which gave them a big boom. We prayed with them and I promised to share her story with my people as well as review her on Google Eats, Trip Advisor, and Yelp.  Great family - when you come to Key West be sure to visit them and support.

Fat and full bellies meant more driving! And we stumbled upon Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park where we camped out on the convertible top and watched the sunset on the Caribbean Ocean. Beautiful.
Back to the Key Lime Pie Bakery for the real thing! I went with the traditional and Greg went with the chocolate covered version on a stick!
It was definitely yummy but tart desserts are not my thing. I abandoned it halfway through in favor of the ONE rum cake I kept to enjoy here (banana flavored.) By the time we looked up it was 11pm and you KNOW I usually go down before 10 so ... OFF TO BED! 🀣🀣 More updates to come tomorrow as we return home. Love you!! 😘😘

Greg and Tan's Key West Adventures - Day 2

Today we got a late start! I slept until 8:00 am that was unreal! 9+ hours of uninterrupted sleep - I'm now looking at my mattress at home sideways lol!
When I woke up Greg was already up. So we talked, and we talked, and we talked! Religion, Critical Race Theory, education, Improvement Science, the power of the media, the women's movement, lynching, Black Lives Matter, American history... for about seveen hours! It was great because it reminded me of what life was like in our apartment, pre-kids, and we could just talk about what and how we think, our beliefs, our values. Precious time indeed. But ... we were hungry and knew we had to take advantage of the sun as it's supposed to be rainy for the rest of the week. So around 4ish we stepped out and got dinner.
We went to a restaurant called Bagatelle and ordered Barrata salad, the Hogfish (yummy!), and truffle fries. Everything was delicious.
After getting stuffed we wanted to walk it off so we decided to walk to the infamous Southernmost Point of the continental United States. It was about a mile from where we were so we thought the walk would be good. We walked through the historic district of Key West. We passed the homes of Ernest Hemmingway and Harry S.  Truman. We passed a "great" Kapok tree, a few hens and roosters, and some additional historic sites. It was beautiful.
Finally we got to the Southernmost Point, which is officially 90 miles from Cuba.
There was a line to take a picture at the landmark but it was moving quickly. We also stumbled upon some Black History. The Souternmost point was the hangout of the Black population of Key West (mostly Bahamian) because the other beaches were segregated and wouldn't allow Blacks there. Now it's a tourist attraction. Go figure.
We also learned about Bishop Albert Kee, whose family sold goods in that area of Key West. In the 50's he became the Key West Ambassador by blowing his conch shell, waving at and welcoming visitors from around the world. Pretty cool.
Coming back, we also walked past an historic AME Zion church. Looking around, it was pretty evident that we were in the Black section of Key West.
Closer to the resort we stopped at another ice cream shop. It was PHENOMENAL! I got a little small cup of Key lime πŸ‹ and coconut πŸ₯₯ and WENT BACK for banana🍌 and coconut! πŸ₯₯Some of the best I've ever had. πŸ˜‹
Back to the harbor walk, there were various street entertainers and merchants out. But the sunset was captivating and was the main attraction.
Now back in the room. We were going to come in and change,  and go back out to swim late but ... we are tired lol. Currently watching a Nat Geo film on the 80s.

See you guys tomorrow!!
