Love In A Sandwich

This weekend my family took a short weekend road trip to Atlanta, GA from our home in the DC metro area.  On the drive back home, hubby, the boys and I traveled through North Carolina.  Due to my Rocky Mount, NC roots, and my childhood memories of going "down the country," anytime I drive through the state I am compelled by on get some REAL North Carolina barbecue and bring it home. (Don't judge me lol) Anyway we made one stop in Greensboro with no success.  A little further up 85 and we stopped at a restaraunt near Durham they happened  to have exactly what we wanted.

Of course after being on the road so long with the kids, when we entered the restaraunt we made bathroom stops before ordering food.  I went to the ladies' room and the boys went in the men's room with Greg.  When I came out they were waiting for me. We went to the front to browse the menu.

While we were waiting, an older gentleman approached us. He had silver gray hair, and a PGA jacket on.  He had leathery skin and a really warm smile.  He introduced himself as Gil Burke then turned to Greg,

"You know Sir, I've been watching you and how you take care of your boys.  You seem like a really great father and I think that's just wonderful.  Please allow me to buy lunch for you and your family."

We were surprised, but not shocked.  Although unexpected, we have experienced  people anonymously pay for our meals.  But for this gentleman to be so moved by my husband's care for his sons - my sons, OUR sons - that was touching to say the least.  And it wasn't that Greg was doing anything unusual for us.  He was just being a daddy.

It was a reminder for me that people are yearning for examples of great parenting and solid families.  And it was an encouragement to continue to be just that. That moment was one of the memories that will be forever etched on my heart.

That, and the memory of this delicious sandwich.
